Agentic checkout, explained

Agentic checkout is an AI agent completing a purchase for a shopper, either inside the assistant or on your own checkout page. What it means on Shopify, Google, Meta and Microsoft, where the limits are, and how to check your checkout the way an agent would.

Short answer: Agentic checkout is an AI agent finishing a purchase on a shopper’s behalf. There are two forms. In native checkout, the shopper pays inside the assistant (Google AI Mode, Meta AI, Microsoft Copilot) and never opens your site. In agent-driven checkout, an agent in the shopper’s browser fills in your own checkout and submits it once the shopper confirms. Both put the order in your store. Neither fires your usual analytics.

Why the term appeared in 2026

Shopping assistants have recommended products for years. What changed in September 2026 is that the biggest platforms let the assistant close the sale:

  • 8 September. Meta launched Muse, a personal AI agent that can browse, fill in forms and buy, and asks before it pays. Shopify added Meta as an AI channel the same day, with direct checkout on by default for eligible stores selling to the US, Canada or Mexico.
  • Around 18 to 22 September. Google began switching on checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini for eligible US Shopify stores and emailed merchants about it (reported by Search Engine Roundtable and PPC Land; Google has not announced it). Shopify’s Help Center confirms it is on by default and still rolling out.
  • 28 September. Shopify let browser agents read and update its checkout and place the order after the buyer confirms, with no merchant configuration.

Microsoft’s Copilot Checkout, for US shoppers buying from English-language merchants in US dollars, was already live. If you sell on Shopify in the US, some orders this holiday season may never touch your website.

Form one: native checkout inside the assistant

The shopper asks the assistant, sees a product card, taps Buy and pays there. What Shopify documents for Google’s version:

  • Eligible US stores selling to US shoppers, shown to US shoppers only. No fees beyond payment processing.
  • Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire. Only Shopify’s server-side “started” and “completed” events do, and the orders appear in the per-channel report under Sales channels › Agentic.
  • Not supported: subscriptions, bundles, customizable products, B2B-only products, local delivery, pickup and products that require sign-in.
  • Upsell, loyalty, consent and trust-badge blocks may not show.
  • The off switch is per channel: Sales channels › Agentic › turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me › Google AI Mode and Gemini › Direct checkout › Save. Products stay discoverable; shoppers are sent to your store instead.

Meta’s channel has the same shape and similar limits. Google also runs a separate UCP checkout program for select merchants with an interest form in Merchant Center Help; it does not mention automatic Shopify enrolment, which is why we mark the switch-on as reported.

Form two: an agent on your own checkout

Here the shopper’s agent, running in a browser, uses the merchant’s checkout rather than the assistant’s. Shopify built this on WebMCP, an emerging standard that only Chromium browsers support so far:

  • Tools on every Liquid store since 5 August 2026 for the storefront and cart, and since 28 September for checkout: get_checkout, update_checkout, complete_checkout and navigate_to_storefront.
  • The agent fills in the checkout and submits only after the buyer confirms. Control goes back to the shopper for 3-D Secure and for any UI extension that blocks progress.
  • Not available for the three-page checkout unless the buyer uses Shop Pay, B2B, embedded and mobile-SDK checkouts, multi-shop carts, draft orders, order edits or payment collection. There is no cancel tool.
  • Shopify tells agents to sign requests with Web Bot Auth or risk its bot protection.

Meta’s Muse works this way on sites that are not channels: it opens a browser, fills in forms and pays through Stripe Link, which issues one-time-use cards.

Who allows it, who blocks it

  • Shopify: allows both forms by default and gives per-channel switches.
  • Amazon: has blocked Muse since 20 September 2026 (reported) and says agents should identify themselves and respect opt-outs. In August 2026 a US appeals court threw out Amazon’s injunction against Perplexity’s Comet shopping browser, so the legal position is unsettled.
  • Payments: Shopify announced Shop Pay in Muse on 21 September; PayPal says its customers can check out through Muse at PayPal merchants. Six banks, including Bank of America, Capital One, ING and NatWest, published voluntary principles for “trusted agentic commerce” on 22 September.

How big is it

Nobody publishes agent-completed order counts yet. The numbers that exist measure traffic, not purchases:

  • Adobe expects clicks from AI services to US retail sites to rise 130% year on year between 1 November and 31 December 2026. It is a forecast and does not give AI’s share of all visits.
  • Adobe’s August report found AI-referred visits to US retail sites converted 60% better than other traffic in July, while growth in AI’s share of visits was slowing.

Treat vendor figures on agent adoption as marketing until a platform publishes order data.

Check your checkout the way an agent would

This is the ten-minute exercise from Issue 008:

  1. Settings › Checkout › Edit › gear icon › Checkout layout. Confirm one-page checkout. Browser agents can only complete the three-page version when the shopper uses Shop Pay.
  2. List your app blocks. Upsells, loyalty, custom fields, consent boxes. Google’s checkout may not show them, and a blocking one hands a browser agent back to the shopper. Remove what you do not need.
  3. Check your top five products. Subscriptions, bundles and customizable products cannot be bought in Google’s checkout.
  4. Sales channels › Agentic. Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me, open each channel, set Direct checkout on purpose, save, and write down why.

Not on Shopify? Ask an AI assistant that can browse the web to add a product to cart and check out as a guest up to the payment step, then stop and list every place it needed you. The prompt is in the same issue.

Agentic storefront, Shopify Catalog, WebMCP, Web Bot Auth, 3-D Secure, server-side events and UCP are defined in the agentic commerce glossary. The broader setting is in What is an agentic storefront?
