TikTok wants your checkout inside its app

TikTok is testing one-click buying from brands on the same protocol as Google's AI checkout, but most shoppers still say they'd rather finish on your site.

Good morning. A week after Google put checkout inside AI Mode, TikTok started testing the same thing for brands, on the same protocol. Yet most shoppers who use AI say they’d still rather finish on your site. This week’s question: where do you want your sales to close?

In today’s brief:

  • TikTok wants your checkout inside its app
  • ChatGPT ads now show up in your attribution tools
  • Shopify’s Sidekick can now redesign your whole store
  • Try this: answer what shopping assistants ask
17%

The number: only 17% of US shoppers who use AI chatbots to shop would rather buy inside the chatbot; 60% prefer the brand's own site or app. It's an August survey of 3,054 US adults by Attentive, which sells email and text marketing for brands' own channels. Source: Attentive.

TikTok wants your checkout inside its app

Three frames from TikTok's demo video: an AI assistant recommending hiking boots, a boot with a Buy direct from brand banner, and an in-app checkout with a Place order button Image source: TikTok, demo video in its original announcement.

The brief: On 5 October, TikTok announced Buy Direct, one-click buying from a brand without leaving TikTok, and Shopping Assistant, a chat that answers product questions. Both are in invitation-only testing for advertisers.

The details:

  • Buy Direct uses the shopper’s saved card and address. You stay the merchant of record.
  • It requires the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), the open standard Shopify co-developed with Google, which also runs checkout in AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify and Stripe are named partners.
  • Shopping Assistant answers from information you provide: product details, shipping, sizing and availability.
  • Access is through your TikTok sales contact. TikTok names no countries, fees or dates; Adweek reports it’s starting in the US.

Why it matters for your store: Google and TikTok now both want to close the sale themselves, on a shared standard, so a new app could start selling your products with little work from you. But last week’s Google checkout didn’t fire Google Analytics and may hide some checkout apps. Decide now which apps you want closing sales for you.

Your move · WATCH (TEST if you have a TikTok sales contact): TikTok advertisers: ask whether your store qualifies for the Buy Direct test and what order reporting you'd get. On Shopify: open Sales channels › Agentic. If "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is on, you're enrolled automatically in new AI channels as Shopify adds them.

Ads

ChatGPT ads now show up in your attribution tools

The brief: On 5 October, OpenAI connected ChatGPT Ads to attribution tools including Triple Whale, Northbeam and AppsFlyer, and let reports count conversions up to a day after an ad is seen without a click. Image ads, shown while ChatGPT generates a picture, start testing in the US later this month.

Why it matters for your store: You no longer have to take OpenAI’s dashboard on trust. If you use Triple Whale or Northbeam, you can compare ChatGPT with Meta and Google in one place. OpenAI’s showcase result is about new customers: 93% of Portland Leather’s ChatGPT Ads visitors were new, per Triple Whale. One brand, picked by OpenAI.

Your move · TEST (if you run ChatGPT ads): Ask Triple Whale or Northbeam how to add ChatGPT Ads to your reports, then judge the channel on cost per new customer over 30 days. Check whether view-through conversions are counted before comparing channels.

Evidence: OpenAI announcement and Ads blog, 5 October. Partner results are case studies OpenAI chose. Not tested by AC Brief.

Store ops

Shopify’s Sidekick can now redesign your whole store

Shopify Canvas showing a demo store's pages, home page, collections and cart laid out side by side on one workspace Image source: Shopify, original announcement.

The brief: On 1 October, Shopify launched Canvas, a workspace showing every page of your store at once. Click to edit, or ask Sidekick, which now edits theme code directly and checks its work with screenshots. Early access for some stores, desktop only.

Why it matters for your store: Layout changes that needed a developer become a chat. The catches: Canvas works only with Shopify-made or custom themes, can’t add app blocks or app embeds, and can’t customise by market. A theme edited in Canvas stops getting theme updates and can’t be downloaded.

Your move · TEST: If Canvas appears under Online Store › Themes, duplicate your live theme and ask Sidekick for one change you've put off, such as delivery times on product pages. Check it on mobile with your apps, then show it to part of your traffic with a Rollout first.

Evidence: Shopify announcement, changelog and Help Center, 1 October. Not tested by AC Brief.

Answer what shopping assistants ask

Four steps: open your best seller, find five answers in the page text, ask an AI assistant the same questions, add every missing answer as text

TikTok’s assistant answers only from what you give it. Make sure your page gives it something to say.

  1. Open your best seller’s product page on your phone.
  2. Find five answers in the text, not in images: materials and who it’s for, delivery cost and time, fit advice, stock per variant, returns window.
  3. Paste the prompt below into ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot and compare.
  4. Add every missing or wrong answer to the description or an FAQ block, as text.

Prompt: Act as a shopping assistant. Using only [product page URL], answer: 1) What is it made of, and who is it for? 2) How much is delivery to [city or ZIP code], and when would it arrive? 3) What size should I get if I'm usually [your size]? 4) Is [variant] in stock? 5) Can I return it, and for how long? Quote the line from the page for each answer. If the page doesn't say, write "Not on the page".

Tool radar

Three tools, three verdicts

  • USE · Shopify Rollouts for discounts: since 2 October you can show a discount to part of your traffic and compare conversion before launching it to everyone. Basic plan and up. Test your holiday offer now, not on Black Friday.
  • TEST · Contentstack Canoe, free plan: launched 1 October. One brand, up to 10 questions checked monthly in ChatGPT and Gemini, plus a site audit. Fine as a monthly check; too few questions to spot a trend.
  • SKIP · Profound, for small stores: brands get a seven-day trial on a fixed prompt list, then a sales call. For a self-serve tracker, Peec AI starts at $95 a month.
