Good morning. AI agents got a clearer look at your store this week. Shopify started showing them your sale prices, and Meta, Shopify and Stripe began writing rules for how agents behave on your site. Shoppers are ready to let AI hunt for Black Friday deals, but few will let it pay. Make sure the deal it finds is real.
In today’s brief:
- AI agents can now see your sale prices
- Meta, Shopify and Stripe draft house rules for AI agents
- Google’s AI checkout opens to stores beyond Shopify
- Try this: check your markdowns before agents repeat them
The number: 43% of likely US Black Friday and Cyber Monday shoppers would be comfortable using AI to find the best price. Only 4% would let it buy without asking first. YouGov surveyed 1,495 US adults in July and August. Source: YouGov.

AI agents can now see your sale prices

The brief: On 9 October, Shopify started sending your compare-at price to AI shopping agents through Shopify Catalog, so they can tell when a product is marked down. It’s on by default for most stores.
The details:
- Shopify sends a compare-at price only when it’s higher than the current price. Agents “might” show it as a strikethrough; Shopify doesn’t say which ones do.
- Stores that use compare-at for MSRP or another reference price start with it switched off. That starting setting doesn’t change by itself if you later change how you use the field.
- Catalog is how ChatGPT and Copilot read your products through Shopify. Google AI Mode reads them from your Google feed instead.
- If you hide compare-at prices from EEA buyers, agents don’t get them for those buyers either.
Why it matters for your store: Deal hunting is what shoppers most want AI for this season. Until last week, an agent saw $80. Now it can see $80, down from $120. That helps when the markdown is real. If your compare-at is a list price nobody paid, an AI can now repeat that “33% off” as your claim, somewhere you can’t edit it.
Your move · ACT: Before you load Black Friday prices, open Sales channels › Agentic › Shopify Catalog › Review product data mapping. Check the Compare-at switch, then preview your most-discounted product. If your compare-at holds MSRP or an old list price, fix the prices or turn the switch off.

Meta, Shopify and Stripe draft house rules for AI agents
The brief: On 6 October, Meta and Sierra announced the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard for how personal AI agents deal with businesses, built with Shopify, Stripe, Walmart and others. On 9 October they published a first draft, nicknamed Poppy, and added 35 design partners, including OpenAI, Target, Nordstrom, Gap, Klaviyo, PayPal, Visa and Mastercard.
Why it matters for your store: Agents are getting turned away. Amazon still blocks Meta’s Muse, and Walmart told TechCrunch that Muse failing on its site was an accident caused by a “verify you’re human” button (reported). Under Poppy, each agent says who it is, and you decide what it may do: check stock as a guest, say, or start a return but not change payment details. It’s an early draft. Payments aren’t covered, Shopify hasn’t said when stores get it, and Amazon and Google aren’t part of it.
Your move · WATCH: Ask an AI agent you use to add your best seller to a cart on your store. If it hits a "verify you're human" wall, ask your platform or bot-protection provider how it treats AI agents. There's nothing to install yet.
Evidence: Sierra announcement and draft post, 6 and 9 October; Meta for Business post, 6 October; draft spec. Blocking reported by TechCrunch.
Checkout
Google’s AI checkout opens to stores beyond Shopify
Image source: Google, Merchant Center Help.
The brief: On 8 October, Newegg started selling inside Google’s AI Mode and Gemini. US shoppers can buy eligible products without leaving the chat and pay with Google Pay, while Newegg stays the merchant of record. Merchant Center’s sign-up for the same checkout, the UCP integration hub, is rolling out gradually in the US, with Australia and Canada next year.
Why it matters for your store: Google began switching this checkout on for eligible US Shopify stores in September. Newegg shows the route for everyone else, and it isn’t self-serve: you first build to UCP, the open standard behind it, then fill in an interest form and wait to be picked. Once in, you choose checkout on Google, a hand-off to your own cart, or both.
Your move · WATCH (TEST if you have your own developers): Not on Shopify? Ask your platform about its UCP plans, as Google suggests. With your own developers, read Google's UCP guide and send the interest form before your holiday code freeze. On Shopify, you're already in: check Sales channels › Agentic.

Check your markdowns before agents repeat them

Agents can now read your “was” prices. Make sure each one is a price you’d defend.
- In Shopify, go to Products › Export and export all products as a CSV.
- Upload the file to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with the prompt below.
- For every flagged product, ask: did we really sell at the compare-at price recently? If not, change it or clear it.
- Open the Compare-at preview in Sales channels › Agentic and check one product you fixed.
Prompt: This is my Shopify product export. Using the price and compare-at price columns, list every variant where the compare-at price is higher than the price. Show product title, variant, price, compare-at price and discount %, sorted by discount, biggest first. Flag every discount over [40]%. Add an empty column called "Last sold at the compare-at price?" for me to fill in. Don't guess missing values.
Tool radar
Three tools, three verdicts
- USE · Gorgias AI Coverage, if you already use its AI Agent: since 8 October, one page shows which questions the AI answers and which it hands to your team. Decide before Black Friday which stay human, such as price-match requests. AI Agent costs $0.85 to $1.00 per automated interaction.
- TEST · Shopify Translate & Adapt Auto-sync, for stores in 12 European countries including the UK: since 9 October, Shopify re-translates new and changed content weekly, in up to 8 languages instead of 2. It’s off by default and never overwrites your own translations. Try one language and read the first sync.
- SKIP · Google Ads Direct offers, this Black Friday: a beta that shows one-time promo codes under sponsored results in AI Mode, seen only on AI Max and text-customisation campaigns. Google’s AI picks which discount each shopper gets, and there’s no help page yet (reported by Search Engine Land).
